Grace House
The Grace House, a homeless shelter for addicted men, was founded a number of years ago as a community outreach effort of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and is now an independent 501c3. It consists of two homes in downtown Athens that can house up to 14 residents. The daily operations are supervised by a Senior Steward and a Junior Steward, who are recovering addicts and have been a part of the Grace House program for at least 6 months.
As of August, 2019, over 600 men have lived in the houses, with stays ranging from one day to over 4 years. The mission is to help in their recovery from drugs and alcohol through the 12-step program, daily meetings, spiritual guidance, sponsorships, and finding jobs in the local community.
As men transition out of the program they are encouraged to come back for regular meetings, become a sponsor, and provide counseling and friendship to the new residents. The Grace House has been, is now, and hopefully will continue to be a beacon of hope for those in need.
